Last week, my sister randomly asked me "Alyssa, you're turning 30?" I nonchalantly said "No, I'm 21." And now that it has been 1 week since she asked me and I have since turned 30, I'm wondering to myself, why are always so scared of aging? There is too much pressure on creating the perfect life, but no life is perfect. I'm afraid there are one too many persons who don't realize that. Even 5 years ago, I imagined myself in a different place than I am now. Today I'm reflecting on my life as it is as a 30 year old. It's going to get very personal, which is a lot for shy and timid me.

I just need to start off with I am not truly happy with my life and that's okay, for now. Nothing is the way I thought and things are pretty much shit, but I find my happiness in my own way even if it's just for a little. People always say if you're not happy with things you should at least be content, but I don't even think I'm content. With my first week as a 30-year-old behind me, it's striking me how much I really need a change in my life. Yes, I am grateful to have a roof over my head, food to eat, a job for income, but things are very unfulfilling. Growing up, I heard the phrase "everything changes after you turn 30" all the time and I’m only hoping things change for the better and I find a place where I can say that I am truly happy with my life. Sure the decision to change things lies within me, but a lot of you don’t even know me. For me to write this is me taking a huge leap.
It's been one struggle after another this whole year, but I continue to fight my way through it. I started off 2018 with a positive attitude, but that was short lived and I feel has been on the downhill ever since. It was the month of September where I saw my chance to take hold of the year, which was why I wrote my Treat Yo'self September post. I wanted at least one happy month out of the year so I treated myself to whatever I wanted. And if there's any time of year where it's acceptable to have things go your way, it's your birthday. With mine being at the end of the month, I took advantage of the whole month. I did my best to find positivity in life and to make myself feel appreciated and valued. There's no significant other or family member who I have to depend on for those types of things, so I did it all myself. Now that we're in October, in retrospect, September was a happy one for the most part and that's what I will keep telling myself as I kick off a new decade of myself. There were curveballs, what is life without them, and I fought to not strike out and I will continue to fight them.

October has just started and with the months remaining in the year, I can only continue to fight my way through finding more positivity in all aspects of this life I'm living. The fact that I have to fight to find positivity and happiness saddens me and it probably does to you too as a reader and this is a whole other subject I could write an essay on. This post is quite depressing and I have been very vulnerable writing this out, but I wanted to be as real as it gets about me, which is what a blog should be about.

I'm not totally sure how to end this post so I'll end on this note: while I enter this new decade of life, I'm cheering to have made it this far. Not many people can say they've made it to their 30s and I will always strive to find what makes me happy in life.

Hello!

Because I’m pretty much branding myself as a petite fashion blogger, I thought I’d do a post about petite fashion.

What does petite fashion mean? By definition “petite” is French meaning small. When talking about petite fashion, essentially we’re referring cuts of clothing being smaller. Typically made for women standing at 5’4” and under as body proportions for these women are mostly on the shorter side than the average woman who stands at 5’4” to 5’7”.

When we talk about cuts of clothing, we refer to each piece of fabric. These pieces are designed to better flatter a smaller body proportion This means you’ll find sleeves cut for shorter arms, inseams on bottoms cut shorter, and dress lengths cut to flatter a shorter woman. Also, not a lot people notice but a lot of jeans and pants have placement for your knees. Since women shorter will most likely have shorter legs, petite bottoms have knee placements adjusted for a better fit. Details and embellishments are also designed to flatter a smaller frame, so you’ll find some prints and buttons smaller than their regular-size counterpart.

While petite is often associated with thin and dainty women, you can still be curvy and petite at the same time. You can also be plus sized and petite as well. I am 4’11” (sometimes 5’0”) and definitely not skinny. I run on the curvier spectrum with my belly, boobs, and a butt yet I do identify as a petite since my body proportions are not even close to that of the average woman. If you’re petite that doesn’t mean every piece of petite-sized clothing will fit you better. I, for one, don’t do well with petite tops as I have a longer torso and broad shoulders. But pants and some dresses are a whole other story.

It wasn’t until about 3 years ago that I started to embrace petite sizing and that’s mostly because I find the fashion industry, whether luxury or fast fashion, largely ignores this market. Most people go along with what is being sold and will make do with regular sizes thanks to the work of tailors. But don’t you wish you could buy something without spending extra on getting it tailored? I feel there has been very little progression in appealing to the petite market. Although with the rise in social media, society becoming very niche-focused, and people becoming more outspoken about everything, we could be on the move into seeing more petite-focused labels.

I hope this helps clarify what petite fashion means since I feel there is a lot of confusion surrounding it. If it wasn't any clarification and you got this far, I hope you enjoyed this read on me explaining petite fashion! Questions, comments? Leave them below!

September is my birthday month aka "Treat Yo’self" month! [Insert Parks and Rec gif here] The other day a friend told me, "This is your month. Make sure you do things that make you happy." Her words struck me like a chord because sometimes I forget that we all deserve to be happy. It's been rough goings for a while now and I figure now is a better time than ever to put some serious self-care practices to reality. So for the month of September, I'm going to be one of *those* people who takes advantage of the whole month in order to feel great. It helps that my birthday isn't until the end of the month so as of right now I have about more than half a month to treat myself.

I feel like in our daily lives, we put more emphasis on filling our lives with doing things and becoming stressed than we do on relaxing and self-care. We'll write out our daily or weekly to-do lists full of our day-to-day work duties, chores, dinners, school, pick-up/drop-off for the kids, but when do we ever make to-do lists full of self-care practices? Not putting ourselves as a priority can make it harder to take care of those who need taking care of in our lives. There is this stigma we should prioritize these to-do lists before taking care of ourselves and by the time we realize it, we are completely burnt out to do anything and struggle to make ourselves feel better. Today I'm listing out things I want to do this month because I deserve to treat myself every once in a while and I hope reading them makes you realize you deserve to treat yourself as well!

Go shopping

Last month I talked about how I went on a shopping break and ended on a note that I would probably not go shopping for clothes unless it was for thrifted or vintage pieces and I'd really like to stay true to that. I'm definitely on this road to cut fast fashion out of my shopping habits because of the reasons I stated in my post, but like any other person who loves to shop, treating yourself to something pretty makes for a fantastic mood booster. It'll fulfill our constant search for self-worth, which is something you look for whether you're aware or not.

Have a spa day

About a month ago, I treated myself to a spa day at a local spa because I was in dire need of some pampering. I booked a massage and took advantage of their spa facilities. It was insanely relaxing and I remember not wanting to leave. A spa day is perfect to just relax and let someone do things for you for a change.

Make stretching the first and last things I do in my day

I don't know about you, but sometimes in the morning after snoozing a couple of times, I will get up and go about my day forgetting to stretch. For 6-8 hours or however many hours you sleep every night, our muscles become stagnant and tensions can build up. Stretching first thing in the morning helps wake the muscles and release those tensions. The same goes for the end of the day—we are out and about and we need to give time to let the muscles rest and relax before bedtime. Stretching first thing in the morning and the last thing at night will help give us an overall better quality of life.

Drink more water

So I feel like I drink enough water, but a little more water won't hurt at all (but I did read there is such thing as drinking too much water, called water intoxication. You can look that up yourselves.) I may have to go to the bathroom more, but those pros outweigh the cons. It is recommended you drink eight 8-ounce glasses a day (8x8). Drinking water is such a simple form of self-care and probably the easiest. Drinking water helps clear our skins, energy levels go up, it helps maintain the functions of our organs, and helps remove waste from our bodies. Before anything, I will drink about a cup and a half of water in the morning. I have found since I started doing so, I am more awake than if I don't.

This is a constant form of self-care in my life. I've always loved to read, but know it can sometimes be tough to pick up and finish a book. I love how a book or an article can take me away to a different place just for a little. Living a different life away from our reality for a while can be good if one knows not to get too carried away. I'm trying to finish Lauren Graham's "Talking as Fast as I Can: From Gilmore Girls to Gilmore Girls (and Everything in Between)" so I can finally get myself to read the Crazy Rich Asians trilogy. A couple chapters before bed will have us floating into dreamland for a good night's sleep! (Psst! Leave me any book recommendations in the comments if you have any!)

Experience things

I am a homebody. I work from home and then I like to curl up in my house clothes, watch some Netflix or Arashi, read a book, check Twitter, then I'll fall asleep. It's not a lifestyle I'm too happy to live, but it does leave me content. This is why I really want to get out this month and keep my mind off drifting to heavy thoughts. I have my calendar out and I'm planning out different activities to get me out of the house.
I'm trying to take on September with a positive outlook. I see September the home stretch for the end of the year because from here on there's usually a lot to take on: Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, travel plans. These events can definitely get the best of us. September is also the start of school for many, which makes an excellent starting point to put forth some change in our lives.

I really hope someone reading this is able to take away something from it. Feel free to let me know what you do to practice self-care in the comments!

Hi! It's me!

I finally got around to work on this post! The reason being, watching Crazy Rich Asians. After watching my sister kept saying, "did you go there?" "oh what about when they went to that rooftop. Did you see that?" And I thought why not take you through the 2 weeks I spent there in June.

I don't have many chances to be spontaneous, but wanderlust and urges by my cousins were calling me to finally visit Singapore. After noticing flights beyond a certain date jumped $400 from one day to the next, I took a chance and immediately texted my cousin asking if I could crash for 2 weeks. Once she agreed I wasn't imposing, my flight was booked. I'm lucky to have a job that allows me to work even while abroad, so I decided to take work with me and make this a half work half play trip. Two weeks after booking, I was on my way.

Booking my flight, I jumped at the chance to have a long layover in Tokyo. My main reason being, the warm-weather shopping. At Haneda Airport, the immigration guy was amazed by hearing me say I was there only for [less than] one day. As I loaded my PASMO with a few hundred yen, I watched the attendant help a foreigner put money in his and then I giggled because I was once that foreigner. I descended the escalators to the subway hearing the familiar subway jingle by Sekai no Owari and hopped on the train towards a rainy Tokyo. All the while wondering if I got on the right one, even though I've done the exact same route 3 times before.

I spent about 4 hours in the city (~2.5 hours shopping, ~1-hour sitting, ~30 minutes eating). I could have shopped for longer, but the constant rain deterred some of my plans. 2 hours in, my arms became sore from carrying my purse, umbrella, and shopping bags. I could write a whole post on one's shopping experience in Japan. It is unlike anything I've ever experienced, even though I only have USA, Canada, and now Singapore as comparisons. There are little details here and there that completely elevate your time in any shop. Some associates like to hover and push for a sale, but I find a small nod saying はい、大丈夫 (hai, daijoubu = it's okay/I'm fine) will get them to leave you alone. If I don't buy anything, as I walk out I am sure to nod and say ありがとうございました (arigatogozaimashita = thank you). After shopping, I found the open rooftop of Laforet Harajuku because I once saw in a drama. Despite the rain allowing for a less-satisfying view and experience, I thoroughly enjoyed myself on the patio of the Starbucks sipping my chai latte and pondering over my purchases. I spent a lot less than what I budgeted for the few hours I was there:

Johnny's shop photos (if you know me, that's a given)

tencel dress

linen dress

2 tops

cotton skirt

a lot of stickers

The sun had practically set as I ordered from the ticket machine for my ramen. While my seat was partitioned for a single eater, I could hear the 2 university students next to me planning their summer vacation. I was in and out of the place within 30 minutes then bid farewell to my favorite city, but not before freaking out I was heading the right way to the airport.

I knocked out for most of the 7-hour plane ride and we landed in Singapore just shy of me finishing a movie I've been wanting to see. One of my cousins and her husband kindly took the day off to show me around since we had the whole day. Singapore is lots of walking, as they warned me while packing for the trip, "no heels!" But like I was going to bring heels anyway! No OOTD for Tokyo because I was legit in my plane outfit and I must preface my Singapore looks were mostly shorts and a tee because it was gross and hot and humid. This added to the fact I was solo most of the time, so I was only able to look nice when I did tourist things with my cousins on the weekends.

Singapore is a small island country, but they really pack it in with giving you a cultural experience, while incorporating the future's modernity as well. In the whole 2 weeks, I balanced work in the mornings with a little exploring in the afternoons. It was awesome spending time with family, one cousin who I haven't seen since I was 2 years old! I was able to meet new people and watch a movie I otherwise would have had to wait until the end of the year to see. Of course, I tried new foods including stingray and laksa. I went to almost all the museums too. Living in this suburban world for my entire existence, it was a thrill to experience a whole different way of life. I people watched while I worked from a cafe at the mall and we all know how fun people watching is! It was also the perfect time for personal reflection as well. To be honest, that was a little hard with the hot weather, but getting to experience more "me" time was something I needed.
My favorite place in all of Singapore was the Gardens by the Bay. Despite it being a man-made attraction, they did it stunningly (and there was air conditioning inside some of the Dome buildings). There were so many different flowers and plants! I was in awe of Marina Barrage, which actually one of their reservoirs, but also includes a big grassy area where people go for picnics and outdoor movies. It was golden hour and hundreds of kites filled the whispy cloudy sky and it looked like magic against the downtown backdrop. I was also excited to be in town for a Marvel Costumes exhibit at their Art Science Museum, which apparently was a hot ticket item since it had just opened and there were loads of people. My Infinity War feelings were still fresh.
I had the loveliest of times and would definitely recommend Singapore for any solo female traveler out there. You would be fine spending 1 week there to see all there is to see. The island is pretty small with any go-to spots pretty close together. I had no problem with their efficient public transportation and that was a plus since I am a spoiled Southern California girl who is a little terrified of trains and buses. When I came back, a couple people asked me what language is spoken over there. Singapore has 4 official languages (English, Malay, Mandarin, and Tamil), you'll be fine getting around with just English.

P.S. June is Singapore's shopping month and it is like the month to go if you want to do shopping. Tons of sales!

And that's the end! Has anyone else traveled and brought their work with them, as in they didn't travel specifically for work, but brought any work to do with them? It was my first time working abroad and it was a little trippy.

I'm throwing this one out before the end of summer. I can see it's starting to cool down in a lot of the country, but hello Southern California has a mind of its own and its still warm! Yup I'll be wearing this linen dress for a while and I have my plans for how to style it in the fall, so stay tuned for a follow-up post next season! Normally, as it says in the title, you'll see a 1 piece styled 3 ways, but I was feeling extra one of the days I wore this piece and was able to mix things up into a 4th look, so you'll find 4 today!

This free size 100% linen dress is from Japanese brand, Moussy, which I bought during my damage spree on my layover in June (quick explanation here). I feel like, for the most part, a lot of petites tend to stray away from maxi styles because there is a high possibility of all the fabric overwhelming a smaller frame. As for me, I love a maxi style. And I should be honest when I saw this piece in the store, I didn't even bother trying it on. It's good to know your own proportions sometimes! I also knew while I was shopping in Japan right before summer that I wanted something linen. Summers are quite brutal over there yet they always know how to dress so stylishly and modestly. I knew they're a country who knows they're stuff when it comes to linen clothing, so I went for it.

LOOK 1:

Shorts: H&M | Red bathing suit: Wal-mart | Sandals: Target | Bag: Arashi 「untitled」Tour

Thanks to the button downs, this dress can fully function as a light layer and I turned it into a cover-up as I went to the pool this summer. At one point my sister asked me "aren't you hot" and I said "no way!" because the linen kept me nice and breezy.

Styled slightly differently on the same day. I wore it as a sort of top. While changing out of my wet bathing suit I reached into my bag and realized I had forgotten a top yet brought everything else. So I basically had no choice but to improvise with this dress. Thankful to the buttons, I styled it with just a few buttoned at the top.

This was a super simple look I threw on for going to church on a Sunday afternoon. It's pretty self-explanatory and I remember wanting something a little extra that wasn't just your typical "jeans and tank" outfit.

LOOK 4:

Finally here is the shirt dress worn as a shirt dress. I have it all buttoned up and styled it with some cuffs on the sleeves to give it a better proportion.

If you're a petite and tend to stray away from the maxi style, take it from this 4'11" gal and just go for it! Certain maxi cuts can elongate and totally flatter the frame. With the right styling of shoes and accessories, maxi styles can work in your favor!

I’m going to be honest with you, I haven’t bought a brand new piece of clothing since mid-June and it’s now the end of August. I did buy 2 pieces from a thrift store trip though and any accessories were a different story. Right before the start of summer, I made my way to Singapore, but not without 10-hour stopover in Tokyo. It is here I did most of the damage during my kind-of vacation (will explain that in my Singapore post coming soon). Long story short, I bought a lot of warm-weather pieces there. It was my first time shopping in a Spring/Summer season over there and I have always been intrigued by their cool-weather fashion. Anyway, this, on top of a couple of pieces I bought in Singapore, I came home feeling very content with my warm-weather closet. I told myself I didn't need anymore and promised myself if the urge came to wanting to buy some clothes (which I knew would come eventually), I would turn to second-hand, hence my 2 pieces from the thrift store. It was then I realized this is the first time I’ve ever fully acknowledged to myself that I didn’t need any more than what I already had.

In this day and age, people tend to stand by the saying of “the more the better”. You see people showing off their 1200 square foot closets filled ceiling to floor with their hoarded collection of shoes, purses, clothes, and jewelry. There are millions of videos and blog posts showcasing hauls. My friend linked me to an article talking about how people are buying clothes for the sole purpose of having content then returning them. Are there really viewers who enjoy this type of content? I, for one, am not fond of it, most especially the buying things just for content. I also recently read Fashion Revolution’s Fanzine #002 LOVE CLOTHES LAST from 2017 and it examined the different aspects of the fashion industry specifically consumption and waste. It overall brought to light different aspects of how we act as consumers of fashion.

At the time I decided to take a shopping break I didn’t have any explicit reasons to do so and it is only in retrospect that I was able to fully grasp what had happened. So I got to writing this post and then understood the importance of breaks in shopping every so often. I spent hours reading different articles on consumer behavior and I’ve come up with 4 reasons why it’s good to take a break from hitting the shops.

You probably don’t need to shop anymore anyway

For me, these feelings were recognized right away. Many of us shop for happiness or self-worth and I found myself happy with who I was with my clothes. And the search for happiness or self-worth in clothes can make the action of shopping addictive (which is my next point). This also ties in with us as consumers defining our line between want and need. I know we all have those pieces currently in our closets that we have not worn yet and that still have the tags on them. We should re-examine why we bought them and what they mean to us and give them a chance.

Shopping can become addictive

On page 20 of Fashion Revolution’s Fanzine #002 LOVE CLOTHES LAST, they refer to UCLA neuropsychologist Robert Bilder’s findings on how excessive shopping is no longer considered “compulsive”, but an “addiction”. In 2015, Bilder and his colleagues created the first scale to fully embed shopping addiction within an addiction paradigm. This means there are scientific studies showing the dopamine levels released while we shop can be equated to those dopamine levels released while gambling or drinking. There’s food for thought for ya!

Saving the environment

As living beings who depend on this very earth we live in, each of us holds responsibility in taking care of it. In 2013, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, Americans produced 15.1 million tons of textile waste and 85% of it ended up in landfills. And on average, each American throws away roughly 70lbs of clothing per year (Huffington Post, 2013). Let’s just say we would have way less waste in those landfills leading to less pollution each year if we bought less stuff.

Financial Reasons

This one is pretty self-explanatory since we can all use a little extra cash here and there. Not spending $20 on a cardigan means we have $20 to spend on groceries for that week or it means we can put it into our savings for a car. Taking money into consideration when it comes to your shopping habits also allows you to reconsider where you draw the line between wanting and needing, which brings me full circle to my first point.

Skirt: thrifted from a really long time ago | Tank: Old Navy from a really long time ago | Sandals: Target | Sunglasses: Privé Riveaux | Scarf: Grandma's

As someone obsessed with fashion and someone working around fashion, I know how hard taking breaks with shopping can be. I have tried those “no spend” months and failed. But I believe I failed because it was a very conscious effort. Here I am going on almost a whole season without new clothes and it’s the result of already knowing my closet and finding satisfaction in it. That isn’t to say I didn’t turn my focuses elsewhere. Aside from my 2 thrift store finds I did buy the AllSaints purse from my last post from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale and I did purchase sandals. Both expenses I viewed as necessary as I was really missing a crossbody in my closet, and my mom keeps stealing my sandals since we’re the same shoe size. As for any of my future shopping, I think I'll stay my current route of sticking to thrifting or buying one of my dream purses.

I do think being conscious of your closet and of the environment are my top 2 reasons why you should consider taking a shopping break. I wonder how many of us head into the store knowing exactly what we want and how many of us walk in winging our shopping experience. I also wonder how many of us buy something knowing we’ll only wear it twice until it’s time to be discarded in the trash or the donation pile, where there is the possibility of your discarded item ending up in a landfill. I understand taking a break for some may be hard, but I feel in order to do so, one has to be less conscious of the fact and try to let things roll. We think about too much and a shopping hiatus is already associated with words like "difficulty" and "will-power", but this was surprisingly an easy-going process for me. These feelings of contentment and satisfaction felt natural, as in I didn't find it as a struggling process. To conclude, I’ll leave you with these tips:

find your own satisfaction of your own closet

start styling your pieces in new ways so it feels fresh and new

see how long it’ll take until you start getting that urge to hit up your favorite shop

Here's a fluffy post for ya! A what's in my purse post! I honestly love seeing what people carry insides their purses and bags. It's an awesome snapshot into someone's life without a person blatantly revealing too much and I think it fulfills a certain curiosity a lot of us have.

I don't change bags too often as it's mostly based on mood. I find with frequent changes, I tend to lose things or forget to move something from another purse. So I will use a bag for a while before changing it out unless an event comes around and calls for change.

Recently, I have been using this AllSaints crossbody since I bought it during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. Since it's a compact purse, I keep the essentials in it. But for the most part, whenever I do change out my purse, what you see here are the things I will always take with me when I leave the house. I like to name my purses, so say hello to Pebbles!

Wallet - duh! By Michael Kors. My mom is a sucker for sales and bought this on a whim while she was out shopping with her friends. She came home with 2 different ones and I was able to snag this one. But these photos have made me conscious of the fact that I really should downsize my wallet situation. I do prefer long wallets over short ones. And I really like how they keep your cash nice and straight. The thing is, I rarely carry cash. So currently on the lookout for some cardcases.

Phone - another duh! It's kind of sad our lives to have become so dependent on them, but they're pretty necessary for this day and age aren't they? It's an iPhone X if that wasn't already noticeable.

Sunglasses - By Privé Riveaux. They came with this bulky case, which wouldn't fit in any purse unless it's a giant tote, so I carry it inside a slimmer one that came with sunglasses I own from another brand.

Mintia - A friend turned me to these while we were in Japan. During my layover, I stopped by the convenience store and grabbed 3 packs, because that's all I could carry since I was already carrying an arm full of snacks, and this is the last one. They are hands down the best mints I've ever had, the tiniest, and definitely the strongest. If you ever find yourself inside a Japanese grocery store, buy them!

Pouch - The red-based paint splattered pouch is by a Japanese brand I am very fond of called Cloudy. I am a sucker for pouches and really wanted something when I was able to catch one of their pop-up shops (they are currently an online-only shop) the last time I was in Japan. The contents of this pouch are as follows:

hand lotion and hand sanitizer from Nature Republic

foldable brush with mirror from Daiso

lip balm from EOS

contact eye drops

Randoms - the things that find their way into my purse because I throw them in there and then forget they are in there, so these differ all the time. At this certain snapshot in time they are as follows:

bracelets - these 2 are really old and came from my parents after their visits to the Philippines. I don't like leaving the house without some kind of accessory. Bracelets are my go-to and these have become something of a staple part of any outfit.

earrings - bought these constellation earrings in Japan at one of their accessories stores. They are the most darling things I've ever seen that I knew I couldn't leave without them.

This wraps it up! I'm surprised there wasn't at least 3 lipsticks inside my purse at this time because usually there are and I forget they're in there. Obviously, if I were carrying a bigger bag I'd be holding a lot more stuff, but that will come another day!

What are some of the essentials you carry in your purse?

I’ve been settled here for a good chunk of time and I thought it would be a good idea to lay out my intentions and goals for nine.threezero.

I started this adventure with the intention of being able to get different aspects of the fashion industry, off my chest. This industry is vast and messy. It’s complicated and controversial. And I wanted to be able to address the different aspects of it through my own point of view, which is why I’ve incorporated my Commentary category, where I dig deep into some of the heavier topics of fashion and style.

I also want to be able to share any styling tips I have as a petite woman. I am 5’0” and have been since 8th grade. Nevertheless, it’s been challenge in more ways than one. Petites are a segment of fashion I feel many brands overlook. And I feel many consumers relate “petite” to tiny old women, conventionally modest, and old-fashioned but that is definitely not the case in this day and age. I want to be able to showcase looks some may not thing would necessarily work for a petite person. If I am able to inspire one person to take on a new style they didn’t think possible, then I will have done my job.

Another goal I have is to let this become a creative outlet. An outlet where I also spread positivity and individuality because when it comes to fashion and style, it’s important to be able to dress positively while staying true to oneself.

I remember when I blogged years ago, it was pure fun and I missed that feeling. I want this to be space where I can be myself, where I can freely talk about fashion and style, while also relating it to my life. I want to be able to just roll with the punches. I don’t want to force anything too much, but I do want to try my best to keep regularly posting. My aim is to free my mind, get creative, embrace style, and connect with others all through fashion.

Do you ever come across those posts titled “8 Fashion Risks You Need to Take Now!”? I’m sure you have seen multitudes of them. After doing a quick Google search, these posts are never really conclusive as to “why” or “for whom” they chose these risks. Those articles telling you what fashion risks you need to take are definitely not for everyone. They are awfully general and are mostly directed at women who are probably already risk-takers when it comes to how they dress anyway. For the everyday gal, these posts can be pretty intimidating and can insight some fear into experimenting with new styles and trends. For the everyday gal, stepping out of your jeans and tee comfort zone and into a satin slip dress and moto jacket takes courage and determination.

There will be people across the globe who have settled with labeling their own style, from preppy to bohemian to girl, but we are each our own person. Various factors, including being fashion risky, in each individual, will differentiate Preppy Person A from Preppy Person B. Some are hesitant to experiment, while others are open to it. This hesitancy tends to come from fear. Fear of judgment and criticisms from others. Fear that you’ll be called out for being “ugly” or “wearing the wrong thing”. What you wear should not be at the will of others. While it’s important you stick to what you are most comfortable wearing, being experimental every now and then, is just as important. There is no right or wrong way when it comes to taking a risk in fashion. You are taking a risk if you choose flats over your everyday sneakers or you reach for a skirt instead of jeans. A fashion risk is as risky as you make it out to be.

Now if you haven’t noticed I am all about the “why”. So here I am giving you the "why". I do my best to give my own reasons why it’s important to take a step out of the comfort zone once in a while when it comes to your own style.

1. Discovery of new styles/discovery of your own closet

Have you ever said, “I don’t have anything to wear”? The next time you go shopping because you know you will after saying this, take on a new trend you have always wanted to try, but were too scared to. Or shop your own closet and mix and match in ways you didn’t think possible. The outcome is most likely you will discover something you didn’t think you looked good in or you will discover something in your closet you forgot you had!

2. Exposure to different types of style

This ties in with point 1 and I also touched on this in my previous post about Judging vs Critiquing Fashion, but overall this point means your eyes become witness to more fashion than before. You become privy to bolder combinations, more colors, different silhouettes--all styles you probably didn’t think possible. Maybe you won’t wear them yourself, but you now know they exist and someone out there is wearing them.

3. Personal Growth
This point is going to get a little lengthy.

I do stand by my belief that the way we dress a form of personal expression, but I believe it’s also more than just that. The clothes we put on our bodies or the way we choose to accessorize describes our own narratives, which I touched on in my Personal Style post a while back. Each piece you wear is part of your fashion narrative and with risks, you can challenge yourself to create a new narrative.

Since we wear clothes every day, it’s easy to find a routine look. Stepping outside of your comfort zone is like riding a rollercoaster. It’s not something you do every day, but you get this rush of adrenaline. You walk out feeling a bit nauseated, but overall refreshed with the thrill of doing something new. Taking a bold step when it comes to fashion is just like that. You’re doing something new and refreshing, which can expose you to different mindsets as well as bring out different aspects of yourself.

4. It’s fun!
Last but not least, taking on an experimental style or doing something a little different is FUN! As fashion should be! Many people hold back because there is this fear of judgment. Those whispers in your ear of "what if people look at me?", just swat them away because what matters is you are comfortable and willing to try new things! Don’t fear judgment by others. Know your occasion, know your audience, wear what you want, and roll with it.

In retrospect to this article, I seem to make taking a risk with your own personal fashion a serious piece of business, but for the most part, fashion shouldn’t be taken too seriously. We wear what we wear and we roll with it. A fashion risk can be as little or big as you make it out to be.
Hey there! It's me!

Here's a post rounding up all of my OOTDs from Instagram from the month of July. I know there will be outfits that never make their way here to this blog and with it being a fashion-focused blog, this round-up is a perfect way to showcase them! I don't capture daily OOTDs, pretty much only when I remember lol! So here we go!

Hi!

1 Piece 3 Ways: Asymmetrical Ruffle Skirt. It's a basically self-explanatory little series where I'll pick one piece and showcase different outfits on how I styled them. To me, they'll all seem different and I hope it helps someone along if they're questioning whether or not they think they can pull of something. There are a lot of things I don't think I can pull off, but it all comes down on whether or not I like the piece. If I like the piece enough, I'll find some way to incorporate into my closet.

Today is this skirt from the Who What Wear collection at Target. It's 100% cotton with this amazing asymmetrical ruffle detail.

Here I am in Singapore (and apparently almost head to toe in Target style lol). All sweaty and everything! It was a lightweight and breathable piece to wear in the humid city-country. I styled it with a refreshing white tank tucked in for proportion, my little straw hat, comfortable sandals because we were walking all day, with the only crossbody I brought with me on my trip. Easy, effortless, cool!

When in doubt, more is better. For a morning shopping, I doubled up on some of the ruffles and the asymmetry with this mustard tank. I was getting tired of tucking things in so I left it out and belted it for extra definition because for sure my waist would have been lost without it. There are my white mules because they're comfortable for a day of walking.

This look was for my nephew's First Communion, which is a big deal when you're a Catholic. I paired the skirt with this dressier tank, which has a beaded neckline, added this duster cardigan from LulaRoe because it was chilly that morning, added a little block heel to give it an extra dressed up feel. I also really liked the play on proportions with the deep V and the longer skirt.

I came across something the other day and it made me contemplate the differences between the two, the difference between judging style and critiquing style. I’ve concluded it all comes down to a person’s open-mindedness and understanding about style.

One can judge, but critiquing is a whole other game. We always say “you are quick to judge” but we don’t say “you are quick to critique” do we? Judging is where you form an opinion and that’s the end of things. Critiquing is forming an opinion, but having some kind of analysis to back up your opinion.

I see fashion as a subjective part of life and style an even more complex aspect of fashion. There isn’t a right way and there isn’t a wrong way to these things. However, there is such thing as personal preference where we decide we like and don’t like certain things. But how many times do we stop and think about WHY we don’t like it or WHY a look isn’t to our personal tastes? Do you think about the person wearing the clothes, their lifestyle, their personal tastes? How open-minded are you about seeing someone wearing something before you declare it as “tacky”?

Culottes: Chriselle x JOA | Top: H&M | Vest: Target | Purse: 3.1 Phillip Lim

Let me point out, I don’t mean to say that some have more authority over what goes in fashion over others because I understand we all are entitled to our own opinions. My point is when it comes to fashion and style, empathy should play a certain role. Example: Person A can immediately declare Person B is a “fashion victim” simply because they do not like what they are wearing. My understanding of this is judging. I feel a simple addition of a few empathetic words would change the “fashion victim” statement into a critique. If Person A were to say Person B is a “fashion victim because they lead this kind of life”, while I don’t think that is any better to say, it goes to show Person A is at least creating an empathetic connection. There is an attempt to understanding both the preferences of Person B and of fashion itself. I do feel people should try to dig a little deeper into their thoughts about fashion, whether they see someone wearing something from a fast fashion shop or they are looking at a head-to-toe look from a luxury designer.

A friend told me knowing what’s fashionable and stylish should be a conscious effort and I couldn’t agree more even if that means what you consider fashionable is personal taste. In this day and age, social media has to lead to the world being exposed to so much more fashion. Despite that, I do think most of the time the effort to expose ourselves to more fashion is quite contained because of the limited access to information. Most of that information consists of Hollywood celebrities. But I’m saying it now, what Hollywood wears isn’t always “what’s in”, especially when you consider we have a whole world full of style. And this is where that conscious effort and empathy should come in. There is a world full of styles and fashions not many know exist and it’s effort put into learning about these that allow people to become more open-minded about fashion.

Next time you see someone wearing something you don’t like, take a little time to ask yourself why you don’t like it?
It is feeling warm down here in Orange County and it's making me realize I am missing some of the warm-weather essentials! I've put together my summer wishlist of items that are either missing from my wardrobe or are in need of an update. I tried to keep things as concise as possible, but this list will totally grow along with the season.

1. Everlane - The Wide Leg Crop Pant in Ochre
Now that skinny jeans are on their way out, I can fully embrace the wider leg styles and these are 97% cotton and just look super comfortable and lightweight! Plus they're a color of pant I don't have.
2. Target - A New Day Boater Hat
I've been on the hunt for a boater hat for a while now and this one just fits the bill. I'm going to need to make a Target run to find this ASAP!
3. People Tree - Mara top
The shade of blue is so fresh yet vibrant and will look lovely with the ochre color of those wide leg pants.
4. Everlane - The V Slingback in Light Tan Woven
These reminded me of a pair of shoes my mom used to have that I always wanted but my feet were too big. They're a little retro and perfect for summer.
5. CLOUDY - Basket bag in yellow with red and blue square
I love that straw bags are up and coming. I'm not a fan that most of them tend to look a little *too* simple for my own personal taste. That's why I love this one by Japanese brand, Cloudy. It has a fun pop of color!
6. Target - Mad Love Keava Footbed Sandal ; I definitely realized I have no sandals for summer and I recently saw someone make a review on a similar style from Target and I want them!

I'm going on a no-spend month this May, but these are all on my exceptions list lol!

I recently went on a quick getaway up to the Pacific Northwest, more specifically Portland, Oregon. It was only a 3-day trip, but well worth it. Since it was just a quick trip, I packed SUPER light and I tend to over pack. I don't travel often, but I feel like I've improved quite a bit and this one was such a challenge. When packing for a trip, I like to generally plan out my outfits for each day then make adjustments on the day of depending on the weather and occasion. You will find me writing out a list about a week before and go on editing it until I start actually packing. For this 3 day trip, I stuffed everything in my little backpack from Target and a tote bag!

DAY 1

We arrived in the early morning and since we couldn't check in to our Airbnb until the afternoon, I knew my outfit had to nicely transition into one I could wear around town. I went as classic as possible with my most comfortable denim, striped shirt, my everyday jacket for the trip, which was a knit moto jacket, then added a yellow scarf because I thought I was missing some color. On our first day, we stopped by Target to pick up some other essentials and it was here my eyes spotted the Hunter for Target collection. As soon as those previews came out, I knew I wanted this green varsity jacket, but was unsuccessful in finding it at any of my local Targets. Needless to say, I was thrilled spotting it here in Oregon!

For some reason, this dress from Zara is one of my favorites, especially while traveling (which I need to state, is not something I do often, but it has come with me on 2 winter trips to Japan and this Portland getaway). It layers nicely, gives me a little color, and is super comfortable. I paired it with tights because despite it being warm by Portland standards, I was cold.

With an early checkout and a late flight, this was another outfit I knew I had to nicely transition into a plane look. Due to space, I kept with the same jeans from Day 1 with my cut out sweater and the same jacket. When I checked the weather before leaving it said this day would be the coldest, which is why I planned for a knitted sweater. Since it looked like an edgier look, I went with a dark lip to go along with it.

This trip was super quick and according to our Airbnb host, we hit up pretty much the important stops like the Japanese Garden, Pioneer Square, Powell's Books, Hawthorne Blvd., Division St., etc. I loved getting away for a quick trip. It was such a challenge, fashion-wise since, to me, the weather seemed a little unpredictable turned out to be great though!), and I chose to fit everything plus souvenirs inside a little backpack.

Where was your last quick getaway?

The other day I found myself researching the transparent purse trend since it's one we have seen it everywhere. As I was wondering whether or not I would actually own one, I started to recall owning a transparent Candies backpack along with a frosted Candies crossbody purse back in the day. Isn't it funny how fashion makes a circle?

At Fashion Week last October, one of Phoebe Philo's last designs for Celine was this transparent bag. It was one that kicked off the trend heading into this spring.

Since then we've seen Eva Chen with a transparent Chanel Flap bag in her #evachenpose posts and Leandra Medine of Manrepeller was seen holding a clear bag by the LA-based brand, STAUD. Plus I'm sure if you frequent any street style slide show, you'll spot someone holding a transparent purse probably more than once.
My own thoughts on this trend lie with a big "MEH." I personally wouldn't be caught holding one mostly because I see it as super impractical and a bit intrusive, but if spending $500+ on it and you're all for showing off what's inside your purse then go for it. Even with a pouch inside to keep things enclosed, I'm still quite sure I wouldn't have one on my arm. If you are looking for a cheap alternative, I spotted some at Daiso, the $1.50 store!

Some random thoughts that filtered through my head about these purses are:
- Do they get sticky from sweat if you hold them for too long?
- If you leave them in the sun, are they hot when you touch them?
- They are pretty easy to clean if they get dirty.
- They do take a nice photo.

What do you all think?

Today is the 5th anniversary of Rana Plaza. If you don't know what that is, take a deep breath as I give you a quick run down. In 2013, a 5-story building that housed retail stores and garment factories in Bangladesh collapsed, killing more than 1,100 people and injuring 2,500 more. The building was not up to code and deemed unsafe by it's workers inside, yet they were forced to work in the building or risk losing their jobs and income. This incident sparked some major conversation within the garment and fashion industries. It provoked the interest in transparency within the fashion supply chain and was the basis of Fashion Revolution Week.

We all know those fast fashion stores. We shop at them all the time, me included, because they're cheap, have all the latest trends, but mostly because they're cheap. But how much do we know about their supply chain? About the manufacturing of the things we wear? Where exactly is that shirt from that we are wearing today? Is that person who stitched my pants together getting paid a fair wage? I for one find myself asking some of these questions and it's now more than ever that we as consumers can demand those answers thanks to social media. You can go right in and ask your favorite brand who made your clothes. Fashion Revolution Week was founded with these questions in mind. According to their mission statement, we, the consumers, can work together to "change the way our clothes are sourced, produced and consumed, so that our clothing is made in a safe, clean and fair way."

I don't know about you, but that is a powerful statement. We wear clothes every day, but never truly stop to think about the people who made them, the environment they made them in, or the process of how it gets from them to inside the store. We are the ones who can change things since we have the power.

On my Instagram today, I asked Zara #whomademyclothes with a recent favorite piece of mine and posted this photo:
It's a small way to get involved this week but a great way to get your voice out there and to get some transparency from a brand!

Here are some links for more information:

- Visit the basis of it it all and learn more about why we need a fashion revolution now and what you can do about it at Fashion Revolution
- Watch The True Cost. This is a life-changing movie every single person on this planet needs to watch. If you have ever bought clothing, this is a must for you.
- Read all about the Clean Clothes Campaign. A global alliance to help make sure garment factories are a safe place to work and workers are given rights.

This is something I have felt strongly for since I watched The True Cost a couple years ago. Retailers depend on us to buy their product and to use/wear their product, so don't we have all the more right to know how that product is made?

Today I'm talking about my style evolution. The above is my current style. The most right outfit being taken just last week. Do you ever get lost in your own brain as you think about how your styled has transformed over the years? Because that's what I'm about to do.

From grades Kindergarten to senior year in high school it was all uniforms everyday, and as you can imagine, it was difficult to gather a sense of style. Honest to God, I knew I loved fashion because of Rachel Green from Friends. She always talked about her job as a buyer for Bloomingdales then Merchandising Manager at Ralph Lauren and hearing her talk about it all sounded like it was a place for me. I heard a real-life fashion buyer speak at a career week and I heard her describe things I wanted and I knew fashion was the industry I wanted to find a career in. It was then I started cementing my own sense of style. It was rough going trying to find my style in a college prep school full of plaid skirts, white polos, and school-embroidered socks, but I subscribed to magazines like Vogue, Teen Vogue, Instyle; would look at fashion websites on our family computer, and even read books from the library. College came and with my newfound independence (and my own car), I was able to start expressing myself every day. I missed the sense of security of a uniform, but loved building a closet that was an unfiltered version of me.

Now getting to the juicy stuff. I dug through old photos and the farthest back I could find were outfit photos from around 2008-2009. These early photos blend together during those 2 years. Since I didn't have a very organized photo system then, I am not totally sure which photos belong to which year.

I stared at these photos for a really long time that I honestly don't think I look bad at all considering these are almost 10 years old (or maybe I just adjusted to my face?). That green dress look got me featured on Popsugar and I honestly can't believe it since there are all those wrinkles on it! It was one of my first vintage finds and I had to stop wearing it once I gained a little weight. Dresses and skirts were my favorite then and it's something that hasn't changed since, but with the fashion world finally embracing silhouettes other than skinny, I am started to see a change of pattern today.

Observing some 2011 looks, I feel like I took a more conservative meets boho route. I was really into necklaces and formed a major collection of costume jewelry and even made my own. I remember loving blazers and loafers mostly because I thought those classic pieces would give me that adult and grown up look. I still wear pretty much the exact looks that are to the most left and most right. I was very much a bargain hunter during these years. I frequented thrift stores, vintage stores, and even shopped in the kids section at certain stores. Definitely was on that post college budget!

Oddly couldn't find anything in 2012, so these are from 2013-2014. It's when we started seeing the rise of Instagram, which is why I started taking outfit photos again. I still have those white platforms I remember wearing them all the time after I bought them. They made me feel like a Spice Girl. During these years, I only documented my outfits on special occasions because that was when I put in the most effort 😉.

And that pretty much leads us to today with the above photos being 2016-2017. With the rise of posting outfit photos on social media and becoming a bit more confident in challenging fashion, outfit photos started becoming a regular thing for me, or at least as regular as I could someone to take them for me.

From 2009 on, I don't see too much change. I've refined things here and there and definitely added a lot more color. Although, I should probably get someone to analyze things since I clearly have a bias. I do feel I can safely say that I can't recall any "wtf" fashion moments within the last 10 years. Those high school years were brutal though. Of course there are hits and misses within those 10 years, but as I dug for photos, there are still some pieces I wore 10 years ago that I still have active in my closet today leading me to believe I've done a pretty good job transitioning my wardrobe!

Going forward, I am satisfied with my current wardrobe, but a girl always has her never-ending wishlist! I do want to start adding more sustainable fashion into my closet. If you have any affordable recommendations, leave them in the comments below! And I want to start putting more focus on higher quality pieces!

Personal style? What is it? There are a lot of factors that goes into how one dresses. Whether it's because of conformity, personal expression, dressing for comfort, etc., we all make conscious decisions on what graces our shoulders. But recently we've definitely seen the rise of the influences of social media. I feel like we used to get dressed in the morning and be able to express ourselves through each piece, but now things are totally different. People are more self-aware, more aware of others, and more aware of how others see themselves. Overall, we're just looking at each other more.

I, for one, think personal style is and should be a form of expression. There is no solid definition to the things we wear, but I do believe whatever we choose to put on tells a story. It may not be our life story, it may be just the story of that day; the story of how we're feeling when we woke up; the story we want to see play out. I see clothing as a sort of narrative to our lives.

Now, we may not be totally aware this narrative is happening, but the little choices here and there as we get dressed in the morning are the ones that build our story. You can think about jeans while you're spacing out in the morning but then reach for a skirt once you're standing in front of your closet. And you're probably thinking "yeah this is what I want to wear today!"
Stemming from that, I am a firm believer in wearing what YOU want as long as YOU are comfortable in it and that's all that matters. As we are influenced by people we see on social media, I think it's easy to fall into a habit of dressing for the sake of gaining followers, looking cool, impressing others. And no. I am one totally not cool with that. You are the one wearing the clothes, you are the one you should be impressing. As long as you're walking out of the house feeling as good as you think you look, I say, you're going to have yourself a fabulous day, no matter what anyone else says.

I do want to add a side note to this: although I say you should wear whatever you want, it's also important to consider your surroundings and the occasion to which you are dressing. You're not going to wear your comfy jersey pajamas to a job interview. And when you're headed to church, you should probably reconsider wearing a Balmain spandex mini with stilettos. You may feel good in it, but you should also be respecting others and if you already have a sense of that in your life, then this shouldn't be a problem.

This is a little long winded and I could probably go on and on, but my main point is I think more and more people are getting dressed in the mornings influenced by outside factors. And it's because of this that the sense of "personal style" is headed to extinction. Let’s write our own narrative!
Hello! Welcome to nine.threezero. Many moons ago this blog once thrived full of random thoughts, inspiration, mostly of the fashion and life variety, but unfortunately I realized I no longer had the dedicated time. The more time I spent away from the fashion world and the blogging world, the more I realized I really missed it. Enter in a couple fashion-obsessed friends. I realized I miss reading up on fashion week, watching runway shows, and reading up on different designers. I also realized I miss sharing my thoughts with people who care to read them. After some serious contemplation on whether or not I wanted to bring this back and some convincing by my fellow fashion friends, here I am! Life will always keep me busy with things, but I do plan on doing my best to keep up a regular pace here. Cheers!
